On to 2022

I skied yesterday! For the first time in 9 months I schussed the alpine slopes, with a wonderful solo day at Hunter Mountain. I had never skied at Hunter before and they are reporting a 1″ total snowfall on the season at this point, but there was plenty of terrain open and the conditions were solid; it was a beautiful sunny day with zero crowds on big, fast lifts and I rode from 1st chair to last chair for 40,408 vertical feet and a max speed of 55.3 MPH. I look forward to more of that soon!

The Beatles documentary, “Get Back” is one of the most incredible movies I’ve ever seen! I have listened to this music my entire life and now I get to watch them create it from nothing?!?! It is reality TV from 50 years ago and a portal into the process of writing, recording, and communicating within the group. Seeing them work through versions of the songs before finding the one that we all know is fascinating; it is incredibly loose and playful in the studio while at the same time being tense from strained interpersonal relationships and impending deadline of new album and live concert of uncertain venue… and they create a masterpiece!

Other great couch couple viewing experiences recently:

-Ted Lasso: Lighthearted, feel-good winner with depth and honesty.

-Succession: Craven characters seeking to destroy each other for money and power.

-Mare of Eastown: Grisly murder in a grizzled town revealing a painful personal journey.

-James Bond: No Time to Die: Ticks all the Bond boxes and a few more besides.

-Tick, Tick…Boom: Jonathan Larsen has a dream!

-Dear Rider: The Jake Burton Story: Reliving my earliest memories of snowboarding and witnessing the birth of a sport through my youth.

-I Think You Should Leave: Outrageous sketches of irrational meltdowns with audience aghast.

I appreciate all the good entertainment available on-demand but we have been to the amazing Nitehawk Cinema at Prospect Park on a few occasions recently: once for West Side Story and once for a 20th Anniversary screening of cult classic “The American Astronaut” and Q & A with writer/director/composer/actor Cory McAbee. Good Food, Drinks and a live audience makes for a fun and engaging viewing experience… but the virus lingers.

It is holiday season and we are aswarm in Omicron infections. It has been a turbulent few years but I will continue to enjoy the loves of my life whenever possible: family, friends, music, movies, skiing!
